Do you want to perform a valid hajj? Learn these Compulsory Hajj Requirements!

The obligatory conditions of Hajj that pilgrims need to know before leaving for Hajj, are in the following hadith:

وشرائط وجوب الحج سبعة الإسلام والبلوغ والعقل والحرية ووجود الراحلة والزاد وتخلية الطريق وإمكان المسير

Meaning: "There are seven conditions for Hajj: Islam, puberty, reason, freedom, a vehicle and provisions, safety on the road, and conditions that make Hajj possible." (Taqrib to Kifayatul Akhyar, Beirut, Darul Kutub Al-Ilmiyah: 2001 AD/1442 AH, p. 177).

Obligatory Conditions of Hajj

Before performing Hajj, you should pay attention to the obligatory conditions of Hajj. This is because the obligatory conditions of Hajj are highly recommended and serve as guidelines for pilgrims to perform the fifth pillar of Islam, which is Hajj for those who are able.

What are the mandatory requirements of Hajj? The following is an explanation that must be noted and practiced before performing Hajj.

Being Muslim
Of course, the main requirement for performing Hajj is to be Muslim, as written in the 5th pillar of Islam. For converts, it is highly recommended to perform Hajj after performing the first to fourth pillars of Islam.

Are other religions allowed to perform Hajj? Of course not, if a person performs Hajj but has not converted to Islam, the worship is not valid. One must become a convert first, by doing the first to fourth pillars of Islam.

Baligh
The second requirement is puberty. A person who has experienced wet dreams for men or menstruation for women, as well as an age of maturity that understands and can distinguish between good and bad.

If the second condition is not met, then one cannot perform Hajj. The person must have reached the age of puberty.

Reasonable
The third requirement is to be of sound mind. As explained, if you want to perform Hajj, you must have a healthy mind or not be in a state of memory loss, depression and so on.

If this is not met, then it is not obligatory to perform Hajj. The person must first heal himself until his mind is restored. If it has recovered, then it is permissible to perform the Hajj.

Freedom
The condition of freedom must be understood first. Freedom means being free in a state so that it is not bound by something or colonization.

Even though slavery is no longer practiced today, Hajj is still not required for slaves or servants who are Muslims.

Able
The fifth requirement is to be able, both in terms of health, finances, and mentality. If a Muslim is not financially capable, then he is not obliged to perform the fifth pillar of Islam until he is financially capable.

There is no compulsion to perform the 5th pillar of Islam. If you feel that you are physically, financially and mentally capable, you should not delay performing the Hajj.

Having a Mahram for Women
The last requirement is that if a female pilgrim wants to perform Hajj, she must be accompanied by her mahram. Mahram itself is defined not only from a woman's husband, but people who are forbidden to marry.

These include younger brothers, brothers or sisters, fathers of women, and nephews. All of these are considered mahrams, so if a female pilgrim wants to go on Hajj, she must be accompanied by one of the mahrams mentioned above.

Definition of Compulsory Hajj

The definition of mandatory Hajj is a series of activities and things that must be done in Hajj.

If they are left out or not done properly, then the hajj is still valid. However, one must pay a Hajj dam (fine) to complete the Hajj, which is usually in the form of slaughtering one goat.

The activities included in the obligatory parts of Hajj are as follows:

Berihram from Miqat.
Wukuf in Arafat until sunset.
Staying overnight in Muzdalifah
Overnight in Mina
Stoning the aqabah jumrah
Stoning the Jamrah ula, Jamrah wusqa and Jamrah aqabah.
Performing tawaf wada'
Prohibitions of Hajj

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam that must be performed by every Muslim who is physically and financially able to fulfill certain conditions. Here are some of the prohibitions of Hajj, which pilgrims must avoid while performing Hajj:

Not Wearing Tailored Clothes (for male pilgrims).
Not Using Perfume.
Not Cutting Nails or Hair.
Not Killing Animals.
Not spitting in the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque.
Violating the prohibitions in the Hajj, results in the worship that has been carried out is not accepted or invalid. For this reason, you must pay attention to the prohibitions of Hajj, before taking the wrong step.

It is important to remember that Hajj is an act of worship performed with sincere intentions and the goal is to gain the pleasure of Allah. Therefore, the pilgrims should perform this pilgrimage by complying with all the provisions and prohibitions that have been set, as well as by following the instructions of the companions or scholars who are competent in Hajj matters.
