The difference between Hajj and Umrah needs to be known by Muslims and Muslim women. Both are rituals of worship performed in the Holy Land of Mecca. However, there are fundamental differences between Hajj and Umrah.
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, while Umrah is not. In terms of the law itself, Umrah is Sunnah, but Hajj is only for people who are physically, mentally and financially capable.
From this, it can be seen that Hajj and Umrah are two different things. The difference does not stop there, but from the definition, time of implementation, and so on. So what are the differences between Hajj and Umrah? Let's see the full explanation below, truFriends!
Performing Hajj and Umrah is a dream for all Muslims. However, it is very important to know the differences between the two. Here are some of the differences between Hajj and Umrah that truFriends should know.
The definitions of Hajj and Umrah are not too different. Hajj comes from the Arabic word 'al-hajju' which means deliberate or towards and visit. The places visited in this case are the Kaaba and certain places in the holy land.
Umrah for Indonesian Muslims is a small hajj. In Arabic, Umrah means a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca by performing several practices. From the definition, it seems that the two are almost similar, but the implementation is different, you know, truFriends.
From the brief explanation above, it can be seen that Hajj is obligatory. Hajj is included in the fifth pillar of Islam, which states that Hajj must be performed by a person who is able. In this case, a person who is physically, mentally, and financially capable.
Umrah has the ruling of sunnah muakkad, which means that it is recommended to be done, but if not, then it is okay. According to the Hanafis, sunnah muakkad has the same meaning as wajib, except that it is below fardhu.
In performing Hajj and Umrah, there are differences in the pillars or things that must be fulfilled for the validity of worship. In performing Hajj, pilgrims need to fulfill the pillars of Hajj which include: the intention of ihram, wukuf in Arafat, tawaf, sai, and cutting hair.
Meanwhile, Umrah does not have the pillars of wukuf in Arafat. So, Umrah pilgrims only need to fulfill the pillars of the intention of ihram, tawaf, sai, and cutting hair.
A significant difference between Hajj and Umrah is the timing. Hajj is only performed from the end of the month of Shawwal to the month of Dhulhijjah. Hajj pilgrims will undergo the pilgrimage for approximately 40 days.
This is different from Umrah, which can be done at any time. Yes, if truFriends plan to go for Umrah, truFriends can go as soon as they wish.
Allah has commanded Muslims to perform Hajj and Umrah sincerely for the sake of Allah through QS. Al-Baqarah verse 196, with the following text:
وَأَتِمُّوا الْحَجَّ وَالْعُمْرَةَ لِلَّهِ
"And complete your Hajj and Umrah for the sake of Allah." (QS. Al-Baqarah verse 196).
Meanwhile, in QS. Ali Imran verse 97 also states that one of man's obligations towards Allah is to visit the House of Allah.
"Performing Hajj is an obligation upon mankind towards Allah, for those who are able to travel to the House of Allah. Whoever denies (the obligation of Hajj), then surely Allah is rich (in need of nothing) from the universe." (QS. Ali Imran: 97).
Then, the evidence regarding Hajj in QS. Al Hajj verse 27 states that Hajj is an obligatory act of worship that Muslims must perform.
"And call out to the people to perform Hajj, and they will come to you on foot and on lean camels from far and wide" (al-Hajj: 27).
There is a difference in the place to perform Hajj and Umrah after miqat. The term miqat means the time limit and place to start the ihram of Hajj or Umrah.
The Miqat for Hajj is in Makkah (Masjidil Haram), Jabal Rahmah, Mina, and Arafat. Meanwhile, the umrah miqat is in several places such as: Mecca (Grand Mosque) and Medina (Nabawi Mosque).
The term wajib refers to a series of rituals that, if left out, do not invalidate Hajj or Umrah, but must be compensated with a fine (dam). The fine itself can be in the form of slaughtering livestock, giving alms with basic food, or fasting.
Compulsory Hajj itself consists of:
There are two obligations for Umrah:
Hajj pilgrims require greater physical strength due to the long series and duration of the Hajj. Umrah pilgrims must also maintain their health during the pilgrimage.
Both Hajj and Umrah pilgrims certainly do not want to skip an activity while in the holy land, so it is necessary to maintain body fitness before leaving. Don't forget to bring medicines, just in case of illness.
9. Cost
We all know that both Hajj and Umrah are quite costly. However, Umrah tends to cost less than Hajj. This is because the Umrah procession is smaller and the process is quicker.
Hajj is relatively more expensive and the queue is also long. After registering for Hajj, pilgrims may wait as early as 15 years or as long as 30 years.
10. Quota
Did you know that the Hajj quota is set by the Saudi Arabian government every year? Yes, the Saudi Arabian government set Indonesia's 2023 Hajj quota at 221,000 pilgrims. Which consists of 203,320 regular pilgrims, 17,680 special pilgrims, and 4,200 hajj officers.
This is the largest Hajj quota in the world, followed by Pakistan with 179,210 and India with 175,025. The departure of the world's hajj pilgrims in 2023 is likely to begin in May and June 2023.
Meanwhile, the Umrah pilgrimage in 2023 will no longer have a quota per year for Indonesian pilgrims. In other words, the Saudi Arabian government has relaxed the rules to make it easier for pilgrims to perform Umrah at any time.
