If truFriends want to go on Hajj or Umrah, there is a reading that truFriends need to recite while in the holy land. The name is talbiyah recitation. This recitation is part of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage which has the law of sunnah muakkad.

For the female congregation, the recitation of talbiyah is not pronounced loudly, but can only be heard by the congregation next to it. Meanwhile, it is recommended for male worshipers to raise their voices.

So, what is the ruling and understanding of the recitation of talbiyah? Find out more below!

Definition of Talbiyah

Talbiyah is the recitation of a statement of monotheism to Allah SWT. This sentence is said by someone who has intended to perform Hajj or Umrah.

In terms of talbiyah is an expression uttered to fulfill the call from Allah SWT with ihram or clothes for Umrah or Hajj. The talbiyah sentence is recited three times aloud.

Ruling on Reciting the Talbiyah

There are various scholarly views on the ruling of reciting Talbiyah. According to Imam Maliki, the ruling of reciting Talbiyah is obligatory, while according to Imam Shafi'i and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbali, the ruling of reciting Talbiyah is Sunnah.

However, the majority of scholars consider that the ruling on reciting the talbiyah is sunnah muakkad, so it should not be left out. Hence, the recitation of the talbiyah is included in the sunnahs of Hajj or Umrah.

Talbiyah Writing & Recitation

The recitation of talbiyah in Arabic writing, Latin, and translation is as follows:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ

“Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaika laa syariika laka labbaik, innal hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal mulk, laa syariika lak”

Meaning: "I fulfill Your call O Allah, I fulfill Your call. I fulfill Your call, there is no partner for You, I fulfill Your call. Verily, praise and favor are Yours, so is the kingdom, there is no partner for You."

Talbiyah Recitation Time

truFriends can recite talbiyah after the intention of ihram from the miqat, both for Hajj and Umrah. The time when the recitation of talbiyah ends is when the Umrah pilgrim is about to start tawaf for the Umrah pilgrim, and when the Hajj pilgrim has finished stoning the Aqabah Jumrah on the 10th of Dhu'l-Hijja for the Hajj pilgrim and then replaces the talbiyah with the recitation of takbir.

The talbiyah can be recited alone or together. This is based on a hadith from Ibn Mas'ud r.a:

'Abd ar-Rahman Ibn Yazid and al-Aswad Ibn Yazid both said: "We heard 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud say in Jam' (the name of the place): I heard the man to whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed in this place recite Labbaikallahumma labbaik, after which he recited the Talbiyah and we also recited the Talbiyah." (HR Bukhari no. 1549 and Muslim no. 1184)
